Chapter 14

The steam tunnels beneath the Academy were known as "The Bones." It was an apt name.

They were white, calcified ribs of ceramic piping that curved endlessly into the dark, carrying heat and Aether to the pristine towers above. The air here was wet and heavy, smelling of boiled water and sulfur.

Kaelen Vance sat on a rusted valve wheel, his head between his knees.

His right arm was smoking.

The Discordant Amplifier—the brass-and-junk bracer he had cobbled together—was hot enough to blister skin. The cooling vents were hissing. The Sonic Shard in the core was dim, pulsing with a weak, tired light.

"We’re alive," Elara wheezed. She was lying flat on the metal grating floor, staring up at the maze of pipes. Her skin had reverted from stone to flesh, but it was bruised a deep, angry purple. "I don't know how, but we’re alive."

"Physics," Jinx said. She was shaking soot out of her hair, looking like a manic chimney sweep. "We rode a sound wave through a mountain. That was... statistically improbable."

Kael lifted his head. He looked at Merrick.

The rogue was pacing. He wasn't looking at the pipes; he was looking at the ceiling, his eyes darting back and forth. He was muttering to himself, his hands trembling as he cleaned his daggers.

"We’re back," Merrick whispered. "We’re actually back. They’re going to sense us. The wards... the perimeter..."

"The wards are looking for external threats, Merrick," Kael said, his voice raspy. "We’re already inside. We’re in the plumbing."

Merrick stopped pacing. He turned to Kael. His face was streaked with grime, but his eyes were wild with a specific kind of panic—the panic of a child returning to a house they ran away from.

"You don't understand," Merrick hissed. "Up there? That’s not a school. It’s a shark tank. And tonight is the Winter Masquerade. Every Grand Mage, every Duke, every person who wants me dead is in that ballroom."

"Good," Kael said. He forced himself to stand up. His bad ankle protested, but he ignored the red warning icon. "That means the target is there, too."

Kael walked to the center of the cramped junction. He activated his System Interface.

A holographic timer floated in the center of the room, visible only to him.

"Listen up," Kael said. The command in his voice cut through their exhaustion.

The crew looked at him. They were battered, dirty, and traumatized. But they looked.

"We have sixty-eight hours before the Signal wipes Overture off the map," Kael said. "We can't stop the machine from down here. We need the Harmonic Key. And thanks to Grix’s ledger, we know exactly where it is."

"Lady Vane’s finger," Elara said, sitting up.

"Correct."

"So, what’s the play?" Jinx asked, tapping her glow-rod against her boot. "Do we blow a hole in the floor of the ballroom? Drop the ceiling on them? Grab the ring from the rubble?"

"No explosives," Kael said. "Cadence is up there. If we make a noise, he’ll silence us before the dust clears. We can't fight him. Not again."

Kael looked at his damaged bracer.
